Keep in mind that "production number" doesn't necessarily equate with filming order. It's likely true in most cases, but not in all. I suspect that because they decided that the finale was going to be the equivalent of five episodes, that they assigned it an "earlier" production number to start working on the budget and production logistics significantly in advance.

Jerry,

I believe that sounds more plausible in this case.

I also read that late in the season 1 run of the original Dynasty, the theme song was again changed -- in this case -- to the version most of us are familiar with, with the trumpet and flugelhorn. This September 23, 1981 re-run of the episode "The Testimony" (originally aired April 20, 1981) proves that, since the opening teaser recaps the events that took place in the episode before, "Blake Goes to Jail" (April 13, 1981).

I believe the first episode to debut the version that was commonly heard in seasons 2 and up was the two-hour special "Krystle's Lie" / "The Necklace." This late season 1 version, however, differs from the season 2 version in terms of the closing bars of the theme, which match up with the closing credits theme on the season 1 run.

This midseason change survived on the syndication/cable reruns, but not on DVDs or streaming. I do hope CBS/Paramount will look into this for future DVD, BR and streaming re-releases of these late season 1 episodes.
