Scott, my condolences to you and your family with the recent passing of your dad.
In my 2004 post I probably should have credited my dad a bit more with planting some seeds. He was a hobbyist like your dad and a bit of a camera collector, so I'm not sure what would have happened if I'd been inspired from a library book but then not immediately had something to tinker with, like my dad's 35mm Mamiya.
