The Christopher Guest stock company was back in action in 2003 for one of the great mockumentaries, A Mighty Wind, a film that presumably may find its roots in Rob Reiner's This is Spinal Tap.

I love the first 85 or so minutes of this film, never having been fond of the "what happened after..." It's just great fun, with terrific performances. Parker Posey's, Sissy Knox was one of the greatest characterizations of someone that literally sucks all of the perkiness out of the world for themselves.

Warner Archive's new Blu-ray is, like other Archive releases, dead-on perfect.

Beautiful images, great sound. Zero problems. Lots of extras, including the purported broadcast.

If you've missed this one, grab a Blu-ray and enjoy. In fact, if you've missed the others by the group, Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show and For Your Consideration, what are you waiting for?

I'm sorry that Guest has moved away from mockumentaries, but I'm so glad that we have the ones he made. His talent for gathering together some of the smartest, funniest, and most-talented actors around and performing the alchemy necessary to pull off a successful mockumentary is unmatched.

Right up there on my list is Forgotten Silver, which many people took as gospel.

(For an interesting and jarring change of pace after these, try watching the NY Philharmonic's concert version of "Show Boat" with Fred Willard playing it straight -- or as straight as might be humanly possible for him -- as "Cap'n Andy".)

I've talked about the single season series (Family Tree) Guest did starring Chris O'Dowd before, but never got much of a response. Funny British/American comedy from HBO. It's worth checking out.

In the mockumentary vein, I'd like to mention Incident at Loch Ness. It's a movie supposedly about the making of a making-of documentary for a Werner Herzog documentary on Loch Ness.


Kind of convoluted, but I enjoy Herzog as an actor.

Didn't know about Forgotten Silver.

FORGOTTEN SILVER is a fake documentary-- and really convincing if you didn't know better -- about the supposed (and forgotten, thus the title) first filmmaker to produce a sound film in the 20's. This was made by none other than Peter Jackson. I covet my DVD, especially now that's out of print and costing quite a lot to purchase.. I would highly recommend it! It was made in 1995, the year after Jackson gave us HEAVENLY CREATURES. Made for New Zealand television, it runs only 53 minutes. It gets in, gets out, and there's not an ounce of fat, which makes it the polar opposite of a certain recent trilogy the same director made a couple of years ago...wish he'd go back to these roots!
