Interesting that both Migration and Wonka had double-digit increases while also dropping several hundred screens.

It’s the beginning of school vacation in many parts of the country so I think that’s parents going with their newly free children.

Schools will all be out on Monday for President's Day, so the Monday grosses on the family-friendly films will probably get a boost over a normal weekday. There was no new release this weekend specifically aiming for families, so Migration and Wonka are the beneficiaries.

School days haven't been an issue for me for a couple of decades now but I thought President's Day was a federal holiday and that all public schools were off? There's definitely no mail today.

It is a federal holiday, but not all school systems follow those.

Mine does but we don't get Columbus Day or Veterans Day.

It's another day where government employees get paid to do nothing, but most of us riff-raff still have to work (and their kids have to go to school).

I remember reading something about theater owners being understandably disappointed that WB took Dune out of November because they were hoping it would boost that period. Now, they might actually be happier it was held back because the box office is in even worse position and needs a jolt. If Dune had stayed in November and been played out by now, what would wake things up now?

Delaying Drive-Away Dolls from September to February because of the strike doesn't seem to have made much difference to its box office fortunes. I don't think it could have done much worse in September than the $2.4 million it is estimated to have done now. That's too bad -- I liked the movie -- but it clearly isn't connecting.

Dune 2 will make it to #1 next weekend so that everyone can at least get on of those viral popcorn containers and undoubtedly injured themselves as well.

Last week I was in a theater where someone was questioning why they were showing a trailer for a movie that says it is coming out in September (The trailer still had the old date in it). I had to explain that it was supposed to come out this past September but was delayed because of the strikes and it was really coming out soon.

It wouldn't shock me if the audience for it didn't even know it was coming out and was confused because of old trailers.

That's interesting that you had that experience. I saw the first trailer one time last year back when it was still scheduled for September and then not since. A few weeks ago, I started to wonder if it was actually going to be released in February or if they would kick it down the road again. There is a very spoilery second trailer that was posted a few weeks ago, but it might have been too little too late. You'd think changing the date on the original teaser shouldn't be that hard. Honestly, it kind of feels like Focus just stopped trying to market this film.

If D2 ends up making almost double the amount of the first, then it seems like we'll probably get D3 at some point—although maybe several years from now to let the actors age in the roles. Dune Messiah starts about a dozen years after the events of the first novel.
