In the Han-shot-first chronicles:

In late 1963, the final pre-release cut of Charade had both Hepburn and Grant using the word assassinate(d). Director Donen realized the problem--this was right after Kennedy's assassination--before the movie opened in early December 1963, so he had the dialogue looped to say eliminate(d) instead.

The Criterion Blu-ray (and I assume all other DVDs and Blu-rays) now has the original assassinate(d).

On the commentary, Donen animatedly asks by what right was assassinate(d) restored? He says he did not authorize it, and it was not the released version of the film, so there's no justification for restoring it.

Is Donen right? Discuss.

It was changed back after initial screenings. The 2 commentary participants who worked in the film are both surprised about this!!!

Great audio commentary on the criterion.

Funny this pops up. I just put this title in my cart.
Keepin On Collecting Cary Grant films.

It’s one of my favorite films. The commentary on the criterion Blu Ray is really good.

When you end up picking up the title, post your review and thoughts.

The Barnes and noble criterion 50% off sale should be coming up very soon too.

Finally bought this on blu ray (the Criterion UK release). Good commentary as others have said, I noted that given the timing of the film's release the word assassinate was altered to eliminate on initial prints but that at some point the original was reinstated. I live in hope that the 4k release of North by Northwest will reinstate Eva Marie Saint's original line of dialogue on the train.

I think that change on North by Northwest was made before the film was released. Also, there’s the possibility that the audio of the original line doesn’t exist anymore.
