Today, Gorky Park. Getting his start in television – most notably with the long running Up (1964-2019) documentary series – British director Michael Apted made the leap feature filmmaking with his debut feature The Triple Echo (1972). While alternating between films and TV, he made a splash in Hollywood with Coal Miner’s Daughter (1980), the biopic of counntry music legend Loretta Lynn that was successful due to Apted straying from the stereotypes of mountain culture that often propogated Hollywood productions set in the Appalachians. Still relatively fresh from that success, Apted took on the film adaptation of Martin Cruz Smith’s bestselling novel Gorky Park. Previously released on DVD by MGM and on Blu-ray by Kino, the film has been resurrected from the OOP dead by Kino.
