Retro-conversion.

For what little it’s worth, a conversion of a Hollywood tentpole picture costs $10+ million dollars.

3D televisions haven’t been manufactured since 2016, projectors are dropping 3D support, and the disc market is declining, and the mass market for 3D discs specifically is pretty much done.

The filmmakers also decided they wanted this to be a 2D film.

So the suggestion is that the studio, against the wishes of the filmmakers, should embark on a conversion that will lose them multiple millions of dollars to play solely in a market that barely exists today?

I feel that the effort might be better spent lobbying for the release of films that already exist in 3D that aren’t on disc.

Stretch goal #2 has been met and the commentary track from Matt Rovner will be included!

The next stretch goal will be announced tomorrow.

I've just been notified that Kickstarter has selected this campaign as a "Project We Love." That is absolutely wonderful. Thank you!

We only need to secure pre-orders for 28 more copies of DOMO ARIGATO to lock-in the inclusion of this extremely rare 3-D comedy/burlesque short from 1953 with the Abbott and Costello, Sid Fields and Ed Wood connection. (See campaign update #7)

Please tell your friends, neighbors and co-workers about this lost stereoscopic treasure, they will forever be in your debt!

Don’t miss this very unique opportunity to see HOLLYWOOD OR BUST and THE GEISHA BOY in super rare 35mm Technicolor prints.

Plus some special surprises from the Archive, hosted by the amazing Owen Kline and yours truly.

Remember, even if you miss a little, you’ll miss a lot!

DOMO ARIGATO has a very unique distinction; it had two separate "World Premiere" engagements. The first "invitational preview" took place in Seattle, WA at the 440 seat Broadway Theatre on June 26, 1973. The second "American Premiere" was held in Los Angeles, CA at the 198 seat Vagabond Theatre on August 31, 1990.

The same version of the film was premiered twice. In fact, it was very likely the same 35mm Space-Vision print that was shown at both theatres!

Only 17 days remain to pre-order our new restoration and be part of the DOMO ARIGATO excitement!

Seventy years ago on March 19, 1954, Astor Pictures second 3-D release CAT-WOMEN OF THE MOON opened flat at the 594 seat Rialto Theatre in New York City.

Astor’s original promotional plans called for an opening at the Holiday Theatre on Times Square with star Sonny Tufts appearing in person but those plans were dropped. Also canceled was a tour with four of the Hollywood Cover Girls in full Cat-Women regalia appearing in San Francisco, Chicago, and key openings in Pennsylvania.

The widespread identification of Cat-Women as a 1953 release is inaccurate. IMDb and Wikipedia currently have a release date of September 3, 1953, at which point in time the movie had not even finished shooting. There was a press screening in 3-D at Samuel Goldwyn studios in Hollywood on December 7, 1953. Reviewed in Variety the next day, it mentions that the feature currently had ‘no release’ lined up. The December 14 issue of Broadcasting magazine, and the December 21 daily edition of Variety, likewise stressed that negotiations for the picture’s release remained ongoing. Variety confirmed a distribution deal with Astor Pictures on March 24, 1954.

Variety’s review of the press screening in December 1953 had concluded with the pronouncement: “William Whitley’s 3-D photography provides the proper eerie quality.” By May 1954, however, demand for 3-D pictures had all but disappeared. Astor’s pressbook now promoted Cat-Women as a 2-D feature, with all the movie paper targeted at a ‘flat’ release. A slug on the front cover assuring theater-owners that the title was ‘Also available in 3-D and wide-screen!’ seems to have met with interest solely in Detroit, where the picture was afforded a three-venue 3-D opening on May 16.

Just five other 3-D engagements could be found nationwide, including a heavily promoted midnight screening at the 800-seat Fox Theatre in Beatrice, Nebraska, on June 26.

Because of the VERY limited 3-D release, the 35mm camera negatives were separated and sent to different film labs in 1954. I am delighted to report that we have recently located both the left/right negatives. We are trying to secure a license so that we can fully restore this rare three-dimensional feature!
