I started watching the classic series during a free trail of Paramount Plus and noticed that it's missing a lot of episodes. Any idea why? Did they decide to only put up the same episodes as the original syndication package? That feels like it would be extra strange as the episodes which are there appear to be the full-length episodes.

The entire series was released on DVD, so it's very odd to me that it would be a rights issue specifically with certain episodes, especially with CBS being under Paramount.

All I can tell you is that "I Love Lucy" was the same until about 3 weeks ago.
In other words, initially only some episodes of each season of "Lucy" were available; then -- about 3 weeks ago -- the entire run was available.

"Gunsmoke" currently has the same issue. Only some seasons are available.

In all likelihood it's due to prior licensing of syndication packages. As those licensing agreements expire we'll probably see more of the complete runs of these classic shows available on Paramount+.
