Season 2 is now in production. Casting announcement, which confirms what Alex posted above:

I'm guessing Romania got too expensive all of a sudden.

There were a lot of reports when the first season came out about Romania being challenging to shoot in from a production standpoint, so I'm thinking that played a part in the decisionmaking. And given the geopolitical situation with Russia trying to march west, they probably didn't want to film in a country that shares a border with Ukraine and once had a lengthy Soviet occupation.

But money was definitely a decisive factor for choosing Ireland for Season 2. Executive producer Steve Stark shot "Vikings" in Ireland and made a deal with the same studio for "Wednesday" Season 2.
