Everything detailed in the "new" story in The New York Times was rumored and discussed for years. A blind item was tweeted out on Valentine's Day 2023 about "a particular actor, relatively new on the scene" describing the person as "a vicious, cruel abusive human being." Ironically, people actually thought it fit Austin Butler, which in retrospect is ridiculous. The authors of several of the blind items then said they meant Jonathan Majors; dating back to his Yale days.

Therefore what's most puzzling is why Jonathan Majors was given so much attention and so many parts to begin with; I never found him all that interesting or charismatic.
