I have a TCL Roku 55617 TV connected by optical to a Samsung HTiB for sound (HTSj4500). The TV has ARC but the Samsung does not.
We use the TV for streaming apps like Netflix, Hulu, as well as viewing media from our PC (connected by HDMI). We don't use the blu ray or the apps in the Samsung. It overheats.

What I want to do is replace the Samsung with a decent Receiver 5.1 that can support sound coming from the TV as well as Xbox One, Also need the receiver to work with Alexa.

1) Can a new receiver use the old speakers/subwoofer from the Samsung HTSj4500 or should I buy speakers/sub too?
2) Will the PC be able to stay connected to the Roku TV? or can it connect to the new receiver?
3) Will I still be able to get sound from the TV's apps and stuff through optical or ARC
4) Can I stay under $600
5) recommendations? I'm looking at the Yamaha RX-V685

1. You will not be able to use the Samsung speakers with any AVR. They are a 3-ohm load and most AVRs require 6-8 ohms. Furthermore, no AVR has an amplifier on-board to drive a passive sub like the one the Samsung came with. However, you could use the Samsung itself as the amplifier for the sub by using its AUX input.

2. With an AVR, its best to connect source components directly to the AVR and not the TV.

3. Yes.

4. Since you need new speakers, no - not with anything resembling decent speakers.

I think you'll be able to come very close to your $600 goal, but you'll have to drop the RX-V685 for the RX-V385*:

* Or wait for a sale. I got an RX-V681 on Amazon for ~$300 near Christmas a few years back, and I see that kind of a sale nearly every year (but you'll have to keep your eyes pealed, as it's usually only on there for a week or two).

Another option is used speakers. Speakers last upwards of 25 years I have a pair that I've been using since the mid 90's.

Other's say the same for receivers, but I'm not a big fan of refurbished electronics. If you don't mind though, accessories4less is a popular clearing house. Here's an RX-V683 for $320.

(edit) I found a 685 new for a good price. Will those Andrew Jones speakers still be ok? I'm not too much over budget. Do I need a sub?

Yes and no for a sub. I would definitely want a sub with those speakers, but it's not the case that you'd have to have one right out of the gate. You'll definitely miss the kick when things explode on-screen, but you can get by until you add one later.

Ok, great. So I'll need some 16 gauge speaker wire and dafuq is a banana plug? Is that like a roach clip?
