Had viewers not read reviews, they'd probably have no clue that Steven Soderbergh's 1995 erotic thriller, The Underneath, is based upon Criss Cross, the same novel that served as the basis of the 1949 production of the same title as directed by Robert Siodmak, and starring Burt Lancaster.
Mr. Soderbergh takes the tale in very different directions, and generally it works.
No discussion of plot here, as it's best to simply go with the film as you view.
Kino's forthcoming Blu-ray looks fine from a normal seating distance, but don't expect miracles from an older transfer. Color, densities, black levels are all very workable. Grain is visible, but not acute, and the age of the master seems obvious.
