A true test of a great series... is one where you imagine what happens to the characters after it's over. Here's what happens... NOTHING; that's all there is; the story and characters no longer exist. But when the writers have brought the characters to such vivid reality that you see them having a life going forward, then mark that series down as a keeper.

So here's the exercise: Name a series you followed that ended and what you imagined happening to the main characters going forward.

I'll start with the one I just finished: The Americans.
Oleg soon returned to his family and homeland because of a more open Soviet policy of glasnost under Gorbachev.
Philip and Elizabeth's children Paige and Henry reunited briefly with them at some point in Russia, but then went back to their more favored and familiar American lives.
(Philip and Elizabeth could never return to the United States because of the crimes and murders they had committed there)
Stan soon divorced his second wife Renee because he could never quite trust her again after Philip suggested she might be a spy.
Martha was able to return to the United States and reunite with her parents and eventually marry a real American.
Gabe died shortly after returning to Russia.
Claudia was reassigned to the KGB in East Germany and helped train and indoctrinate a promising young agent named Vladimir Putin.

Maybe I should have put this in the TV On DVD thread, I thought there would be a lot of offerings.

Here's one we didn't have to imagine what happened to the characters 13 years later: Deadwood.

Creator/writer/showrunner David Milch was thankfully given that opportunity to tell us himself.

The show kind of sets the table, so not much of a stretch to imagine that in the universe of Fringe...

Peter and Olivia have a long happy marriage and their daughter Etta eventually follows in her mother's footsteps and joins the F.B.I.

Meanwhile in the future, Walter Bishop in addition to escorting Michael to a critical juncture in the future, provides guidance and inspiration for humanity in their efforts to essentially save the planet.

- Walter.
