Yikes, this is terrible. I was terrified of Willy Wonka as a kid, but I loved Gene Wilder. I saw everything he did in the 70s and 80s, even the Worlds Greatest Lover. Going to have to spin Silver Streak and Young Frankenstein (two of my favorites) this weekend.

A very talented and funny actor. I think Young Frankenstein is his funniest film, but I think Willy Wonka is his greatest character (and one of the greatest internet memes).

RIP to a comedy great.

His Willy Wonka really is a piece of genius. He plays the character nearly as a psychopath enticing children to his lair, yet he is never repulsively creepy, and he is always by far the most sympathetic figure in the film. He's devilishly snide and condescending toward the other characters. It was a "meta"-performance before meta was a thing.

Without his performance, the movie would be forgotten trash. With Wilder, it is the finest kind of children's story, both warm and menacing.

Loved him in everything that I saw him in. Was always secretly wishing that we would come out of his self imposed retirement and bring more joy, certainly, into my life. RIP Mr. Gene Wilder. You so richly deserve for all the wonderful memories you have left behind but heaven I am sure is rejoicing.

Regards,

So much time, so little to do.
Strike that. Reverse it.

Very saddened by this, and my young adult children will be too.

Loved all his performances - the warmth of the man shone through every one of them.

Dr. Frankenstein: Now that brain that you gave me. Was it Hans Delbruck's?

Igor: No.

Dr. Frankenstein: Ah! Very good. Would you mind telling me whose brain I DID put in?

Igor: Then you won't be angry?

Dr. Frankenstein: I will NOT be angry.

Igor: Abby someone.

Dr. Frankenstein: Abby someone. Abby who?

Igor: Abby... Normal.

Dr. Frankenstein: Abby Normal?

Igor: I'm almost sure that was the name.

Dr. Frankenstein: Are you saying that I put an abnormal brain into a seven and a half foot long, fifty-four inch wide GORILLA?

[grabs Igor and starts throttling him]

Dr. Frankenstein:
Is that what you're telling me?

What a loss. Young Frankenstein is such a classic on so many levels. Two years ago I was lucky enough to see some of his papers from his time as a student at the University of Iowa in their special collections section. At least he is reunited with Gilda... Rest in peace.
