I don't own a cell phone.

Right now I have a VOIP land line phone number. Several people have complained that they texted a message to me and I didn't respond.

Well my VOIP land line doesn't receive text messages. PERIOD.

Apparently no error message is generated, something along the lines of "you can't text - phone number is a land line". Why is this? IMHO this is absolutely crazy.

SMS texting uses a "send and pray" type of protocol. There is no acknowledgement sent from the receiving party, so there is no way of the sending party to know whether the intending receiver actually got the message.

If you have a computer and internet access you could get a free Google voice number which would give you text message capability.
